The Averages Competition

INTRODUCTION

Bournemouth Swimming Club hold a group of competitions for the Averages Cups, which involve a series of nine events spread throughout the year covering all strokes. In total there are ten competitions with boys and girls divided into five age groups. The events are held on Tuesday evenings at Stokewood Road and start at 8:00 pm.

The averages are normally held between January and June of each season.

SWIMMING OF EVENTS

The events are staged on selected Tuesday evenings, with ALL age groups swimming the same event on that evening. The result is determined by the time recorded. There are no finals.  Please be there by 8:00pm so that your name is registered.

POINT SYSTEM

A table has been established which shows the points awarded for a range of times for each event. The table is based on ASA Graded Times for ‘A’ grade and ‘B’ grade swimmers of various age groups.

AIM OF SYSTEM

Each swimmer is swimming against the clock. The points awarded to the swimmer is dependent on how quickly they swim the event. Who else is swimming does not affect the points awarded.

Even if a swimmer is guaranteed a particular placing, there is a clear incentive to swim as fast as possible, the faster the swim the more points.

By using the same tables for all age groups, swimmers can aim to improve their points each year. They will have a personal objective irrespective of who else is in their age group.

The events are swum as a series of heats with no need for finals, as minor discrepancies on times are not critical to points awarded.

The points awarded for individual events highlight, to swimmers and coaches alike, which stroke each swimmer needs to improve.
