Charity Swim

Christian Mitchell (One of our coaches and senior water polo team players) alongside students at Bournemouth School for Boys swam the length of the English Channel (21 miles) on February 7 for hospice charity Julia’s House and as part of a week-long charity event at the school. Alongside students Justus Dirks, Arief Mckenna and Adam Guliver they started at 6am and took 10 and a half hours to complete this challenge.

Adam had an eight-year-old cousin who was supported by the hospice before she died in 2015. He said: “I had a cousin called Sophie who suffered a brain tumour. She battled for ten months before she passed away. Julia’s House were there throughout to give her constant care to my family and this is the first thing I’ve done to support them.”

Christian swam just shy of 7 miles and the other boys made up the rest of the distance.

“I would personally like to thank everyone who donated and supported this event, thank you to Bournemouth Swim Club who sponsored us and also to BHlive for allowing us to swim at Stokewood throughout the day”

The total raised for Julia’s house charity by Christian and his team so far is £6951 which is a huge achievement

On the 8th/9th July in Coventry 3 of our club players competed in the National WaterPolo Talent games!!

The 4 Talent Centres which are Bolton, Bristol, Hucknall and Croyden, all came together for a weekend of different workshops both pool based and classroom based. Followed by the all important matches.

Will represented the Bristol Talent Centre and after a close bronze medal match with Hucknall placed 4th in the Boys U16s

Harvey represented the Hucknall Talent Centre and placed 3rd in the Boys U16s after their narrow victory over Bristol

Anna represented the Bristol Talent Centre and WON 🏆 1st place in the Girls U16s. This came from a dominant 18 – 7 victory over Bolton in the final

Congratulations to all 3 of them 👏

U16s Boys Inter-Regionals 2023

On the 1st/2nd July Harvey Mitchell captained the South West team in Liverpool

On the Saturday were the group games where the team lost by 1 goal to the eventual winners 4-3 and then also drew with the eventual runners up 6-6. Then came the dominant 17 – 5 victory over Wales and a 2-3 win over the East. This meant after day 1 the South West ended 3rd in their group of 5.

On the Sunday the team played their first play off against London and narrowly lost 7-9 meaning their final game was the 7th/8th playoff. The South Wests campaign came to an end with another tight game but ultimately missing out 13-12 to end up 8th overall.

Although ending up 8th this does not reflect the standard of WaterPolo played by the team because all the games were so close any team could have ended up winning. Congratulations to the North East winning the competition and the runners up South East

Harvey was nominated MVP for his efforts in the team over the weekend for scoring numerous goals, his defensive and play making skills. Also a mention to Kristijan Dobnjak from Cheltenham for his fantastic efforts in goal across the tournament.

Bournemouth Pier to Pier 2023

On the 1st July 6 of our club members took part in the Bournemouth Pier to Pier swim.

The 1.4 mile route, although altered, tested the guys but it was a great achievement for them all especially with the great times produced.

Our fastest swimmer in the wetsuit category was Nick with a great time of 27.12

Our fastest swimmer in the no-wetsuit category was Jerome with a time of 32.34

It was an double-edged achievement for both the fundraising for BHF and also personal achievements

Congratulations to all that participated

U16s Girls Inter-Regionals

On 24th/25th June Anna Culpan represented the South West region in Liverpool where 9 teams competed together to be the champions.

The group games took place on the Saturday with the top 2 contesting in the semi-finals on Sunday. The South Wests first group game was against Scotland in which they won 6-9 and then came up against a tough South East, the team narrowly lost out losing 3-1. This didn’t stop the team coming 2nd in their group after a triumphant 12-4 win over the East Angels where Anna scored a great goal past the experienced goal keeper.

Sunday saw the Southwest play in the first Semi Final against the North West; the final score 5 -7 to the South West meant they were into the final!!

Playing against the South East again in the final the team were confident they could take revenge and win the tournament. In the third period the South West were up 3 goals before losing 2 players meaning after the 4 quarters were over, the teams were locked at 14 all and the game went to a penalty shoot-out. Unfortunately the South East held their nerve and won 17-15 final score. South West took the silver and North West the bronze.

It was a brilliant tournament with lots of close matches and the Girls did brilliantly to come second. Congratulations Anna and the South West team.
